Obituary

Joseph J. “Skip” Mucci Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, after courageously battling cancer.

Born on December 10, 1941, in Stoneham, Massachusetts, Skip was the son of Joseph J. Mucci Sr. and Ada E. Mucci. He was raised in Malden, where his family resided for many years at 384 Medford Street. Early in life, his mother affectionately gave him the nickname “Skip,” inspired by a popular comic strip character of the 1940s. The name remained with him throughout his life and became the name by which he was known to family, friends, customers, and fellow car enthusiasts alike.

Skip graduated from Malden Vocational High School in 1960, where he studied automotive mechanics. From a young age, Skip developed a passion for automobiles.

In October 1968, Skip married Margaret “Peggy” E. Lyons of Somerville, Massachusetts. In April 1970, they welcomed their only child, Joseph J. Mucci III. The family eventually made their home at 384 Medford Street in Malden, where they lived for many years.

In 1972, Skip’s lifelong dream became a reality when he and Peggy purchased the gas station located at the corner of Medford Street and Highland Avenue. Together they established Skip’s Auto Service, a business that would become a well-known and respected fixture in the community.

In 2003, Skip experienced one of the greatest joys of his life with the birth of his grandson, Brennan, followed by the birth of his granddaughter, Ryan, in 2006. Becoming a grandfather brought him immense pride and happiness. Brennan and Ryan affectionately gave Skip the nickname “Bumpa”. The name stuck and quickly became a cherished title that Skip proudly carried for the rest of his life.

Skip was predeceased by his parents, Joseph J. Mucci Sr. and Ada E. Mucci; his beloved wife, Margaret “Peggy” Mucci; and his brother, David Mucci.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Marion Grey; his brother, Mark Mucci, and Mark’s wife, Dana, and their children Jackson and Juliana of Alabama; his son, Joseph J. Mucci III, and his wife, Kimberley, and his cherished grandchildren, Brennan and Ryan, of New Hampshire. He also leaves behind many relatives, friends, former customers, and fellow car enthusiasts who will forever remember his friendship, generosity, dedication, and love of automobiles.

Skip will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, love of family, and lifelong passion for classic cars. Whether serving customers at Skip’s Auto Service, restoring a treasured automobile, spending time with loved ones, or sharing stories with friends at a car show, he lived life with purpose and enthusiasm. His legacy will continue through the family he loved, the business he built, and the countless lives he touched throughout his 84 years.

Funeral service will be held at Spadafora Funeral Home, 865 Main Street, Malden, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday October 16th from 5:00pm-8:00pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be in Forestdale Cemetery, Malden, Massachusetts.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
