Gilbert "Gus" Gosselin, 80, died peacefully at his home on May 22, 2007, cared for by his loving wife, after a long illness.
He was the husband of Ruth Alty and the loving father of Marcia Gosselin-Alfieri and Matthew Gosselin as well as the loving grandfather of Marco and Katherine Alfieri. He also leaves behind his cousin Barbara Littlewood and son-in-law Carmine Alfieri.
He was born in New Bedford and resided there for 60 years before moving to Malden in 1992. He worked for many years as a product engineer at Morse Cutting tools of New Bedford. He served 4 years in the Navy during the Korean War, based in Japan and South Korea aboard the repair ship USS Hector.
His passion in life was the game of chess and he spent many years both playing and teaching young people the value and joy of the game, which he believed "made you smarter and prepared you for the game of life".
Mr. Gosselin was the recipient of many awards, including the Points of Light award from then Governor Mitt Romney, and several awards from the United States Chess Federation for his work with young chess players. He directed numerous chess tournaments that were highly regarded by his young scholastic chess friends and their parents. He was a member of the Massachusetts Chess Association, holding the office of treasurer for many years. He founded the Living Memorial Chess Fund, which donates chess equipment to clubs and schools throughout the region.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at his home on Saturday, June 2, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend.
