Barbara
Okojie
April 5, 1937 – April 2, 2026
Barbara Bannister, born in Washington, D.C., passed away in Malden, Massachusetts, just days before her 89th birthday. She lived a life filled with love, resilience, humor, style, and grace.
A woman of strength and determination, Barbara was a lifelong learner whose wisdom and sharp wit left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She proudly owned her home and built a life rooted in perseverance and faith. She worked at Eastman Gelatin for Kodak before becoming a successful businesswoman, running her own childcare service, “Nini’s Tiny Tots.” She also devoted over 20 years as a foster parent, earning the Goldy Rodgers Award for her dedication to children and families.
Barbara was known for her vibrant personality and many talents. She was a writer, a “disc jockey queen,” and a true fashionista famous for her hats. She brought joy to those around her through her humor, storytelling, and unforgettable cooking, especially her beloved hot rolls.
She loved music, movies, and travel, with Barbados holding a special place in her heart. Her faith guided her life as a devoted member of Imani Church of God in Christ, where she served on the Mother’s Board. She also enjoyed staying connected with her community and never missed her time with QVC, where she proudly held the title of a most dedicated shopper.
Barbara’s love knew no bounds. She opened her heart and home to many and lived by the words: “Do your best, get the best, give the best.”
She is survived by her loving children, Constance Hickerson, Penni Hickerson, Betty Cooper, and Barbara Brooks Morris; her great-granddaughter Lakiya Horn, who she loved as a daughter; and Susan Sherald, who she also embraced as her own. She is reunited in eternal rest with her son, William “Ricky” Hickerson. Her legacy continues through her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
